Kolkata, 17 Feb 2023: GRSE's The Women in Public Sector (WIPS) wing has been conferred with the "Best Enterprise Award" in the "Miniratna" category for the year 2022 at the 33rd National Meet of Women in Public Sector (WIPS) in Kolkata on 10 Feb 23. The award is in recognition of WIPS activities in the company. The GRSE management has been extending support for WIPS activities over the years. This is GRSE - WIPS wing's 5th consecutive award. The award was presented by Shri Atul Sobti, DG, SCOPE at the 33rd Annual Forum conclave of Women in Public Sector (WIPS) in association with SCOPE at Kolkata.

GRSE Wins Best Enterprise Award 2022 - 1

Addressing to the gathering at CMD's Session, Cmde PR Hari IN(Retd.), CMD, GRSE, said, "I am not sure whether all of you know or not, a warship is always called a lady, and whenever someone enters the warship or leaves the warship, a courtesy salute is given at the gangway as a mark of respect and whenever a woman visits our ships, she is received and seen off again with a salute, a mark of respect."

GRSE Wins Best Enterprise Award 2022 - 2

He also shared, "I have been informed that this is the 33rd National Meet of WIPS and I happen to see the theme of WIPS being very unique. Shakti 5S. As Head of a heavy engineering and manufacturing industry, 5S is very close to my heart. In our parlance, 5S means Set, Sort, Shine, Standardise and Sustain, towards improving the work environment to enhance productivity. Here, very interestingly, I happen to read, the 5S represented as Strong, Sincere, Smart, Synergetic & Sustainable. Ladies, these 5 typical characteristics of a woman make her strong and a "Shakti". As a quote goes "A woman is like a full circle, she has the power to create, to nurture and to transform". So far we have had two Presidents including the current Supreme Commander, one Prime Minister, 16 Chief Ministers, 24 Governors, four Chief Justices of the High Court, 11 Supreme Court Judges, and today we have 41 smart ladies as industry leaders in various organisations in India. Keeping away the bureaucracies, the IAS, IPS officers, lady officers in the armed forces alone today are 2904 officers serving the nation. Is this not enough for us to be feeling proud? No! we want more. This is just the beginning; we are actually at the cusp of a transformation. A transformation that should lead to gender equality in the true sense, but thus ladies, the baton is in your hands. It's for you to decide the pace at which you must move and cross the finishing line. Do you want to touch the tape first or do you want to be just one of the contenders? The also ranks, absolutely no! You must strive to cross the line and cross the line first. We all keep talking about breaking the glass ceiling, yes, it's a reality and unfortunately a stark reality that there is a ceiling that still exists. But then we must accept the fact that it is a ceiling that has been created together, we also must remember that a few decades back, not more than a couple of decades back, the glass was thicker and definitely opaque but today it is just wafer thin and translucent, not yet transparent. All it takes is a strong nudge to break free. Once you break free, forget the sky, Sky is not the limit."

He concluded his address by saying, "I have a wish, will there be a day when I will be attending a MIPs, Men in Public Sector event where dignitaries will give motivational lectures as to how men should match women or rather will there be a day when a simple conclave is there "Employees of Public Sector" meet together, I hope that day comes soon."

The 33rd WIPS meet also witnessed the presence of Shri MK Singh, IPS, DG & CG Home Guard, West Bengal, Dr. C Dharini Mouli, President WIPS, CMDs, Directors, Senior Officials and over 600 women employees of Public Sector Undertakings across the country. The prestigious WIPS award was instituted by the Central APEX Forum of WIPS in 1992 and is presented annually to select PSUs in recognition of the finest efforts made to harness the growth & development of Women in PSUs.

GRSE signs landmark MoU for Production of Marine Engines under 'Make in India' Initiative

Kolkata, 28 Jan 2023: In a major step aimed towards bolstering the 'Make in India' initiative, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Rolls Royce Solutions of Germany for manufacture of high quality marine diesel engines. The MoU was signed on January 27, 2023 by Cmde. PR Hari, IN (Retd), CMD, GRSE and Shri GS Selwyn, MD, MTU India in the august presence of Vice Admiral Sandeep Naithani, AVSM, VSM, Chief of Materiel of the Indian Navy. Senior officials from Indian Navy and GRSE were present on the occasion. The MoU shall go forward among the highlights for the upcoming Aero India '23.

Under the agreement, GRSE and Rolls Royce Solutions will co-operate in the licence production and localization of the technologically advanced MTU S4000 governmental marine engines. These engines, with a power output of 746-4300 KW, are compact, reliable and easy to maintain. They are used for Fast Patrol Vessels, Interceptor Boats and Fast Attack Crafts built by GRSE and other shipyards around the country. So far, these engines are imported, bringing down the indigenous content of these classes of vessels built at Indian shipyards.

MTU is a solution brand of Power Systems, a fully-owned subsidiary of Rolls Royce plc. The manufacture of these engines in India would also provide a great opportunity to local industry, particularly MSMEs involved in the manufacture of components and spares. It has always been GRSE's aim to help in the growth of such business enterprises as part of 'Make in India' and continuously strive towards building a strong eco system of small & medium enterprises involvement in the prestigious projects that it handles. The MoU deals with Transfer of Technology related to engine assembly, painting, parts sourcing and after sales service for these engines that are to be assembled at GRSE's Diesel Engine Plant in Ranchi.

On the occasion, Commodore P R Hari, IN (Retd) said, "This partnership between GRSE & Rolls Royce Solutions is a step towards indigenisation of Marine Engines. This alliance will create a robust eco system of self-reliance in the naval shipbuilding domain and is a fillip for AatmaNirbhar Bharat."

Kolkata, 19 Jan 2023: The keel of the first New Generation Electric Ferry for the Government of West Bengal was laid by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd in Kolkata on January 19, 2023. This zero-emission Ferry, designed by GRSE, is being built for the Government of West Bengal and is poised to revolutionise passenger transport across River Hooghly as well as the movement of vessels along National Waterways I. Shri Binod Kumar, Principal Secretary, Department of Transport, Government of West Bengal, graced the occasion as Chief Guest during the keel laying. Shri Rajanvir Singh Kapur, IAS, MD, WBTC, Shri R K Dash, Director (Finance), Cdr Shantanu Bose IN (Retd), Director (Shipbuilding), Shri Sanjay Dattatraya Panse, Independent Director, GRSE, Shri Sanjeeb Mohanty, Independent Director, GRSE, Shri Mihir Kumbhakar, ITS, Chief Vigilance Officer and other senior officials of GRSE were also present during the ceremony that marked a new chapter in the shipyard's long and glorious history. Such ferries will potentially replace the diesel engine driven ferries that now operate on River Hooghly, bringing about a major transformation towards the reduction of carbon emissions.

In June 2022, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Government of West Bengal & GRSE for design & construction of the New Generation Electric Ferry. The 24-metre-long New Generation Electric Ferry designed by GRSE will be powered by a 210 Kilowatt per hour (kWh) liquid cooled Energy Storage Solution. It is ergonomically designed to carry 150 passengers in air-conditioned comfort and with no noise or engine vibrations, the Ferry will offer a smooth ride.

The Ferry will have twin screw propellers for greater maneuverability and a Catamaran Aluminium hull which will allow speeds upto 10 knots. It will have solar panels to augment power supply. It is being built to comply with latest classification society rules related to passenger safety.

During his welcome address, Cdr Shantanu Bose, Director (Shipbuilding), GRSE mentioned that The Next Generation Electric Ferry is a R&D effort by GRSE and it will be a technology demonstrator and green initiative for the Inland Waterways for West Bengal, other states, coastal & island territories of India. He also stressed that as we at GRSE, care for the environment, the lifecycle cost of this vessel is 20-30 % lesser compared to diesel powered vessel.

Congratulating GRSE on the occasion, Chief Guest for the ceremony Shri Binod Kumar stated that this is the first electric powered vessel for Government of West Bengal and these vessels are significant in terms of sustainable development. Shri Kumar also emphasised that we are majorly affected by global warming and pollution related to fossil fuels and this new electric ferry will play a major part towards green energy initiative as this will run on rechargeable electricity and solar energy. Highlighting the importance of this vessel in the River Hooghly, he stressed that both the sides of river are densely populated and this vessel will prove to be the cheapest, time saving and a popular mode of transportation.

The last month has been a busy one for GRSE, the only shipyard in the country to have delivered 108 warships to the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard. Two more have been exported to the Republic of Seychelles and Mauritius. Over the last few days, GRSE has delivered a Fast Patrol Vessel to the Indian Coast Guard. This ship was commissioned at GRSE on January 12, 2023. The shipyard also flagged-off a passenger-cum-cargo Ocean going ferry - the first of its kind built in the country - for the Cooperative Republic of Guyana. GRSE also laid twin keels for Anti Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC) at its Rajabagan Dockyard. Eight of these warships are being built by GRSE.

In 2022, GRSE also became the only defence shipyard in the country to be honoured with the Raksha Mantri Award for designing the most silent ship of its class - an ASW SWC that has now been launched and is being fitted out. GRSE is also building three Advanced Stealth Guided Missile Frigates for the Indian Navy under the latter's project 17A. Two of these have already been launched. Four Survey Vessels (Large) are also under construction at the shipyard which is also working on an export order for six patrol boats for the Government of Bangladesh.
