The Government of India is responsible for ensuring the defence of India and every part thereof. The Supreme Command of the Armed Forces vests in the President. The responsibility for national defence rests with the Cabinet. This is discharged through the Ministry of Defence, which provides the policy framework and wherewithal to the Armed Forces to discharge their responsibilities in the context of the defence of the country. The Raksha Mantri (Defence Minister) is the head of the Ministry of Defence. The principal task of the Defence Ministry is to obtain policy directions of the Government on all defence and security related matters and communicate them for implementation to the Services Headquarters, Inter-Services Organizations, Production Establishments and Research and Development Organizations. It is also required to ensure effective implementation of the Government's policy directions and the execution of approved programmes within the allocated resources. Ministry of Defence comprises of four Departments viz. Department of Defence (DOD), Department of Defence Production (DDP), Department of Defence Research & Development (DDR&D) and Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare and also Finance Division.

Society of Defence Technologists (S.O.D.E.T)

The Defence Public Sector Undertakings and Ordnance Factories established with Government of India funding have, as their mission, the National goal of ensuring self-reliant industrial support to the Defence Services in the country.The emerging demand of new and high technology products and services called for continuous update of technologies through in-house development and other methods of acquisition. Each of the Defence Public Sector Organisations and Ordnance Factories are in possession of several technologies. In order to ensure exchange of information and pooling of these technological resources for better utilisation of assets, product improvements and development of new products and to also avoid duplication of efforts and generally achieve better value for money it was decided to promote and develop the Society of Defence Technologists with headquarters in Bangalore.

Indian Ordnance Factories is the oldest and largest industrial setup which functions under the Department of Defence Production of the Ministry of Defence. The ordnance factories form an integrated base for indigenous production of defence hardware and equipment, with the primary objective of self reliance in equipping the armed forces with state of the art battlefield equipments.

Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd

The journey began in 1884, with a small factory on the Eastern Bank of river Hooghly. It was named as Garden Reach Workshop (GRW) in 1916. Later, on 19th April 1960, it was taken over by the Government of India.
