Voyage of Excellence in Warship Construction

Shipbuilding has been the core business vertical and the shipyard has modernized its infrastructure spread across the three ship production locations in Kolkata. With integrated ship construction using modular construction technology, the shipyard is equipped to construct 20 ships concurrently powered with a strong team of multi-disciplinary Design Engineers creating innovative designs for current & future ready warships. The state of the art Virtual Reality Lab and the latest design software, aid the design team in their efforts towards innovation in ship design using better ergonomics.

Ongoing Domestic Projects

GRSE is currently executing three warship building projects for Indian Navy & one for the Indian Coast Guard worth approximately Rs. 25,000 Crore including a Prestigious P17A Project for three Advanced Frigates and two projects won on competitive.

Recent Export Orders

With the record of having exported two warships already to Mauritius & Seychelles, the Shipyard bagged two recent export orders on competitive basis including an order to build six Patrol Boats for Government of Bangladesh and order for construction & supply of one Ocean Going Passenger cum Cargo Ferry Vessel for Republic of Guyana.

Mortel GRSE has made GRSE has made commendable progress by successfully incorporating a high percentage of indigenous equipment fit into the ships being built for the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard, having achieved over 90 % indigenous content onboard Anti- Submarine Warfare Corvettes & Landing Craft Utility Ships.
In addition to ship building, GRSE as a diversified organisation, is also engaged in engine overhaul, assembly & testing and other engineering activities. The engineering division manufactures deck machinery items, pre-fabricated portable steel bridges and marine pumps. Though the core competency of GRSE has been shipbuilding, more than 5300 Portable Steel Bridges have been supplied to Indian Army, Border Road Organisation, State PWDs & Central Governments. These bridges, primarily used for disaster management, have also been exported to friendly countries including Bhutan, Nepal, Myanmar & Sri Lanka.
GRSE installed the Majherhat Bridge in Kolkata in a record time of six days and also installed a bridge connecting VIP Road & Salt Lake, again in a record time of 12 days. Pre-fabricated Portable Steel Bridges have also been installed at Darjeeling, Bankura, Tamluk, Jalpaiguri and Krishnanagar, Nadia District of West Bengal.

GRSE Steers Industry in Bengal

During 1971-72 Garden Reach Workshop (GRW) played a significant part in the revival of the Engineering Industries in this region. The then Chairman of GRW, Shri B.B.Ghosh headed the new Industrial Reconstruction Corporation of India (IRCI) as its first Chairman and it was an honour that the IRCI had drawn upon the expertise available with the growth oriented management of GRW. As a result of the detailed studies carried out by GRW and the IRCI, it became possible to reopen National Iron & Steel Co. Ltd (NISCO). This unit was placed under the technical and financial management of GRW for a period of five years under a collaboration agreement signed between NISCO and GRW. GRW played a significant role during the period 1971-1979 towards revival of industry in Bengal with strategic participation in organisations such as Carter Pooler & Co. Pvt Ltd, Calcutta, Britannia Building & Iron Co. Ltd etc.
As a Bengal based Public Sector Organisation GRSE has always been instrumental in creating an eco system of development around its vicinity. The legacy mentioned above continued to grow over the years & with adoption of new-age smart business solutions, GRSE has been contributing to the ecosystem with strategic focus towards improving the following aspects :

Procurement from Local/ MSME Vendor Base

GRSE has been outsourcing work to local MSME vendors for past many years now. This has led to the creation of a local network of small businesses giving a sturdy boost to the small and medium sector organisations operating in Bengal. Our vendors are associated with us in long-term partnerships ensuring steady business and sustainable livelihood

Employment Generation through Local Sub Contracting Services

Close to 85-90 WB based MSE/ NSIC vendors are currently servicing GRSE across various subcontracting jobs, which is much beyond the minimum mandatory nos. as stipulated by the Govt. Around 4000 local manpower is engaged through sub-contractors for multiple service jobs across the GRSE population of Metiabruz, Kolkata.

GRSE has also been deeply engaged in social and sustainable development projects in and around Garden Reach as well as across Kolkata. From – generating employment for local youth, providing vocational training to build employability skills, to organising mobile health check-up and blood donation camps, funding education of local children belonging to minority and marginalised sections, and strengthening infrastructure of local public schools – we have been taking conscious and concerted efforts towards being a part of Bengal’s development saga and contributing towards building a better tomorrow for all in Bengal. Over the last five years, GRSE has organised Health Check Up Camps & Blood Donation Camps and the beneficiaries from these camps have been around 1200 & around 500 under privileged local people respectively from 2015-16 to 2019-20. These camps are being organised over decades by GRSE. Cancer detection equipment was provided to Saroj Gupta Cancer Centre, Thakurpukur. Cancer detection & awareness camps were conducted during 2018-19 for local people. 2867 cataract surgeries have been conducted for local needy people of Metiabruz, Kolkata.
GRSE in its association with Indian Institute of Cerebral Palsy (IICP), Kolkata since 2010-11 has been adopting three classes every year and providing infrastructure support including customized mini bus for facilitating transportation of wheel chair bound children. GRSE has renovated the school building and motivation hall of R.B. Institute for Mentally Retarded Children, Howrah and constructed two class rooms and other ancillary facilities for the Institute as well. GRSE has distributed aids & assistive devices to 912 beneficiaries with disabilities in association with ALIMCO.

Swachhta Abhiyaan

As part of Swachh Bharat Mission, GRSE has engaged in activities including contribution to Swachh Bharat Kosh, Clean Ganga Fund, organising Swachhta Pakhwada, distribution of waste bins to local schools, installation of incinerators, training to school children on WASH practices, improvement of Anganwadi Centres of Metiabruz etc. with a total spend of approximately Rs 3.86 crore from 2015-16 to 2019-20.

Activities oriented towards Covid 19 Relief / Aid & Prevention

In rebuilding the economy, in light of the COVID-19 crisis, GRSE has stepped in action through various measures taken by it to contain the crisis. GRSE contributed Rs 1 crore to the Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations (PM-CARES) Fund. GRSE distributed over 22, 500 masks, over 200 sanitizers, over 4050 kg of rice, pulses, potatoes, 1500 soap bars etc. to over 450 families living in and around the vicinity of the shipyard. GRSE handed over 50 Medical Oxygen Cylinders to ADM, South 24 Parganas.
