“Kavaratti” was handed over by Rear Admiral VK Saxena, IN (Retd.), Chairman & Managing Director, GRSE to Cdr. Sandeep Singh, Commanding Officer (Desig) of the ship, in the presence of Cmde. DK Goswami, CEO, Chairman, D448 Eastern Naval Command, Shri S S Dogra, Director (Finance), Cmde. Sanjeev Nayyar, IN (Retd), Director (Shipbuilding) and Cmde. P R Hari, IN (Retd), Director (Personnel) and other Senior Officials of Indian Navy and GRSE.

The frirst three ships of the series, INS Kamorta, INS Kadmatt & INS Kiltan were delivered earlier and now form an integral part of Eastern Fleet of the Indian Navy. The P 28 Class of ships strengthens the Indian Defence System and is the shining Armor in the “Make in India” programme.

The first 03 Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvettes built by GRSE have been creating waves across the world since their induction to the Indian Navy, having participated in several Overseas Operations and International Maritime Exhibitions at Malaysia, Singapore and other countries including International Fleet Reviews. The 3rdAnti-Submarine Warfare Corvette, INS Kiltan recently participated in the prestigiousExercise Malabar 2019, an endeavor to strengthen India-Japan-US Naval Cooperation and enhance inter – operability. With 90% Indigenous Content, equipped to fight in Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Warfare conditions, featuring the integration of a host of weapons and sensors, the P 28 Class of ships is yet another milestone in the journey towards self – reliance and Make In India. These Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvettes have catapulted the Indian Navy into the Elite Club of building Stealth Ships. The “X” form of the Hull and Super Structure gives very Low Radar Cross Section and special design of propulsion system minimizes Radiated Underwater Noise. The Stealth features make the ships almost invisible to the enemy both above and below the sea surface.

The Kamorta class of Corvettes are designed to be equally effective in the littorals as well as in the deep oceans. These class of ships have been designed as an extremely versatile ASW Platform capable of neutralizing the enemy submarines using her indigenous weapons like Torpedoes, Rocket Launchers and integral Helicopter. The ship has a displacement of 3250 tonnes, length of 109 M and width of 12.8 M.The ship has a maximum speed of 25 Knots, with an endurance of over 3400 NM at 18 knots speed and can accommodate 17 officers and 106 sailors.

Some of the special features incorporated in these ships for the first time in the country include the following:-

  • Special High Strength Warship Grade Steel Type DMR 249A Indigenously developed and has been used for shipbuilding for the first time in the country on these ships.
  • Kavaratti and INS Kiltan are the first two major warships to have the unique feature of Superstructure made of Carbon Fiber Composite Material. It is for the first time in the country that such composite material is being integrated with steel hull of a ship and GRSE is the first shipyard in the country to have successfully achieved this task.
  • Over 90% Indigenous Content and hence a major step towards achieving self-reliance in the state of the art warship design and construction.

The journey of delivering “Kora Class” Missile Corvettes way back in the 1990s to the delivery completion of the four Anti – Submarine Warfare Corvettes gives GRSE the exclusive edge in construction of these Frontline Corvettes for the Indian Navy.

GRSE currently has a strong order book position of over Rs 27, 000 crore under which there are a total of 18 warshipsat various stages of construction. GRSE touched a key milestone with the delivery of 06 warships in 12 months (Mar 19-Feb 20). With the delivery of Kavaratti, the company has Five Shipbuilding Projects that are under way viz., Four Projects of the Indian Navy and One of the Indian Coast Guard. GRSE is aggressively bidding for the new Request for Proposals (RFP) that have been issued by Ministry of Defence and is exploring possibilities for Export to friendly countries for its Warships and Pre-fabricated Steel Bridges. The shipyard has been recently awarded with the ICC PSE Excellence Award (2017-18) for “Operational Performance Excellence” and 16th National Award for “Excellence in Cost Management” in the category of Medium Public Sector Manufacturing Companies. With this nature of business of warship construction, year-on-year performance is considered relevant than the quarter-on-quarter performance.

Highlights of the 103rd Annual General Meeting of GRSE

The 103rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE) was held on Friday 20 Sep 19 at 1030 Hrs. at Bhasha Bhawan of National Library, Kolkata.

Commenting on the outcome of the Annual General Meeting, Rear Admiral V K Saxena, IN(Retd.), Chairman and Managing Director, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd., stated that this AGM had a very special significance as it was GRSE’s first AGM after the successful IPO of the Company, wherein the Government of India disinvested 25.50% of its shareholding in the Company. The Public Issue was well received and the shares of the Company are now listed at NSE and BSE. The CMD took the opportunity to extend his gratitude to all the investors for the confidence they reposed in the Company, which was further reflected by the increased market capitalization post listing of its shares.

The core objective of GRSE has been the strengthening of India’s defence preparedness. GRSE is the only shipyard in the country to have delivered 100 warships since its inception as a Defence Public Sector Undertaking (DPSU) in 1960. It further boasts of a dedicated engineering division engaged in the manufacture of bailey bridges, apart from a variety of deck machinery equipment which goes primarily on-board ships. The Company also has a separate Diesel Engine Plant at Ranchi, for assembly, testing and overhaul of diesel engines. All these contribute to reinforcing GRSE’s reputation as a major force behind making India self-reliant in warship building and engineering production. As India’s shipbuilding industry further matures, it also spells enormous potential to forge strategic partnerships with friendly foreign countries. This will eventually make India a preferred hub for defence shipbuilding exports and repairs. GRSE is well-positioned to take advantage of these emerging opportunities within India as well as abroad.

The performance of GRSE, backed by its excellent order book position, continued to be strong during the year 2018-19.

  • Net Worth increased from Rs.1,021.53 crore in 2017-18 to Rs.1038.30 crore in 2018-19, an increase of 1.64%.

The Board of Directors of the Company have recommended a final dividend of Rs. 5.10/- per equity share of face value of Rs. 10/- each for the financial year 2018-19. This is in addition to the interim dividend of Rs. 1.85/- per equity share of face value of Rs. 10/- each which was paid on 28  Mar 19. This marks an increase in dividend per share from Rs. 4.43 in 2017-18 to Rs. 6.95 in 2018-19. The order book position of the Company as on 01 Jul 19 stood at Rs. 27,804 Cr. PRESS RELEASE
GRSE READIES DOUBLE-LANE PORTABLE STEEL BRIDGE IN RECORD TIME

Kolkata-based Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE Ltd.), a premier establishment for building warships and carrying out engineering fabrications in the country, has come out with yet another stellar achievement. The Research and Development team of GRSE has turned the construction of a bailey type double-lane portable steel bridge into a reality, that too in a record time. GRSE Design Team’s R&D ventures have always paved the way to ease heavy traffic congestions and establish links between roads/ highways through playing a vital role in strategic surface transport networks.

It started with the immediate market requirement of a two-lane quick-launch bridge to supplement the existing single-lane bailey bridge. Taking up the challenge, the Engineering Design team at GRSE embarked on the process of design, fabrication and erection of the bridge on a war footing. The construction of the bridge was carried out inside the Company’s premises near Belur station, in Kolkata. Scientists from the Structural Engineering Research Centre (SERC), CSIR have validated the bridge through live load tested for double Class-A vehicle loading as per latest Indian standard, viz., Indian Road Congress (IRC-6).

Construction of Launching Abutment for the bridge was completed and the bridge, the first of its kind in India, was launched on 30 Aug 2019.

The pre-fabricated bridge has a span of 42.67m without intermediate pier and a width of 7.5m. It can support two-way traffic comprising heavy vehicles with a total load of about 110MT.With a modular design facilitating easy assembly, these bridges can be erected quickly even in the most demanding of terrains and conditions. These are ideal for remote areas as onsite installation infrastructure is not required. Usually the foundation takes about 28 days for the reinforced concrete pedestal to gather maximum strength, following which the bridge structure can be properly placed and fixed on it. Considering these aspects, the bridge is expected to be thrown open to traffic in about 30-45 days from the day of commencement of foundation work.

With the launch of the new Bailey bridge, GRSE has reinforced its position as the largest manufacturer of bailey type portable steel bridges in India. The pioneer has around 70% market share and has delivered over 5100 bridges till date in the 40 years since it started bridge fabrication.
